Motion is Lotion

Do  you ever wake up and feel like the Tin Man?

images-4

After entering the last 3rd of my life, I now find my body talks to me when I get out of bed in the morning. After decades of enjoying a body that did not restrict me from doing exactly what I chose, it was shocking.  I always felt that being in the fitness business would save me forever from feeling stiff and achy.…

Chicken? Think Fat, Fat And More Fat......

In response to the avalanche of clinical data now demonstrating the health hazards associated with eating red meat, a lot of Baby Boomers have reluctantly made the switch to chicken, believing it to be a good source of lean protein.  As a Baby Boomer and dietary vegan, I often hear the proud declaration "I've…

Turning 50 - Looking and Feeling Great!

As I age I notice that I do not exercise the way I used to. For one thing, I no longer care as much about the latest fitness trend. I still enjoy the social sports like golf and enjoy swimming, yoga and skiing when I can. The reality is that none of these are consistent. I have never been a runner and quite frankly it hurts my feet, knees and back. So, my regular exercise regimen simply consists of walking almost everyday. I do anywhere from two to five miles.…

Aging Without Growing Old: How Does Betty White Do It?

By Rosemary Lichtman, Ph.D. and Phyllis Goldberg, Ph.D.

A real comedy standout on TV and in the movies lately - among all the youthful as well as botoxed, lifted, heavily made-up faces - has been Betty White. Lifetime Achievement Award winner at 88 and1/2, as Betty proudly declares, White is the poster gal for throwing away the calendar when talking about age.

With the population of older adults growing, the percentage of adults over 65 is projected to increase in the U.S.… Continue

How Well Do You Bounce?

Life can really suck some days. Have you ever felt that way? Is today the day? I have had my fair share of technological challenges these past few months and I decided to keep notes on just how well (or not!) I was coping with the situation.

There are many times, both in business and in life, when we are tempted to just throw up our hands and give in – to surrender! Life, for me, has generally been really great. When it comes to technology, though, that’s…

Fall Prevention Exercise at Home research study in Sacramento...

California State University at Sacramento's Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects approved my "at risk" research proposal. The California Parks and Recreation Society's Therapeutic

Recreation section awarded me a research grant scholarship to help fund

my research study. And a Kaiser grant funded the City of Sacramento's

50+Wellness' Stand Up to Falls program for the second year. As the Fall

Exercise is the best way to reduce the risk of a fall

I am presenting six fall prevention workshops for the City of Sacramento's 50+ Wellness program's "Stand Up to Falls" program. The target group is community dwelling older adults who are concerned about falling or who have fallen and want to learn how they can reduce the risk of another fall. As a fall prevention exercise guru and certified personal fitness trainer, I am amazed that people do not associate… Continue

Health Planning is Retirement Planning

I try to keep a regular weekly exercise schedule, running 3-4 miles three times and lifting weights two or three days. I exercise because at fifty-five years old I understand the benefits of being healthy more energy, lower blood pressure, stronger heart, and hopefully the ability to live a long and active life.

All the talk and concern about health care costs makes me wonder why we aren’t more pro-active about taking control of our own healthy lifestyle. Watching what we eat,… Continue
