While working on developing products and services for 2010, it occurred to me that I needed to ask a number of questions of the women I serve or hope to serve before I can create a telecourse, e-book, or any other product that is spot on. So I began to do just that, and have spent the past couple…

For women, the second half of life brings with it many career choices and questions. For some women, continuing in a current career doesn’t fulfill personal, spiritual or financial needs as it once did. For others, re-entering the workforce has become a necessity due to the changes in the economy…

Next week is Active Aging Week, and how many of you have heard of Nordic or Balance Walking? No, it’s not what they do in Scandinavia to cross the street, nor does it require snow or freezing cold temperatures. It was originally started by cross country skiers who wanted a way to workout in the off-season. It’s a form of walking with two poles, that to the rest of us look suspiciously like ski poles (that’s where the Nordic part comes in, get it?). Now, as with most exercises designed to get you…

I turned 50 this past December, and guess what? My life isn’t over. I didn’t slide down that slippery slope of aging I kept hearing about. If anything, the most amazing thing happened. I woke up. I have morphed into my authentic self like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon. I was as surpri…

So what's in a number anyway? Golfers know all too well that on the course numbers matter... and in life, they matter too (sometimes). The number 59 is a magical number to the game of golf. Only 4 golfers on the planet have managed to post 59's during a PGA tour event; Al Geiberger in 1977, Chip Beck in 1991, David Duval in 1999, and Annika Sorenstam in 2001 (LPGA). Up to now, the number 59 in the game of golf is the st…

Technology can enhance the way we live today. We use technology in almost everything we do. If you drove to work today, you already used a computer (car). If you checked your messages, sent emails, typed in information, are reading this, etc...you are using computers to complete every day tasks.
Tonight when you go home to watch a show on DVR (computer) or listen to your IPOD, think about why we enjoy all of these technologies, yet shy away when these same technologies can be used to enhance a…

Our senior population will rely more and more on mobility aids to Age-in-Place. After an injury or surgery and during rehabilitation assistive devices will play a role in recovery. Some if not many bypass FDA regulations in a gray area as assistive technology (AT) devices. At first glance it seems like it's no big deal because everyone assumes they are harmless. Many in healthcare consider assistive aids harmless with no idea what healthcare issues or secondary issues they create. It's time to t…

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation:
*Approximately 8 million American women have osteoporosis, resulting in more than 2 million fractures annually.
*One in two women over the age of 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in her lifetime.
* An average of 24% of women who experience a hip fracture will die from complications.
Postmenopausal osteoporosis is something we, boomers, should take very seriously. I had the privilege of asking Dr. Karthryn Diemer, Clinical Director…

Medications are used with the intent to improve quality of life. Older adults are at an increased risk for medication-related problems. Drug therapy may cause more harm than good if an improper medication is used or therapy is not monitored. There are many factors that increase the likelihood of a
medication-related problem in the older patient.
As we get older, our body metabolizes and eliminates drugs less effectively; this is a result of primarily liver a…

"Caregivers, you need to take care of yourselves."
You know that. You hear that and you read that all the time. The problem is, um, just how do you do that? Our elder(s) need you all the time. They can't afford to pay for in-home care. You don't even know where to start when it comes to taking care of yourself. A partial answer is free respite care, provided by people who can sit with your elder while you have some free time.

A recent news article put out the word: folks in record numbers seem to be saying “no thanks” to Florida as a place to retire, and that comes as no surprise to me. In fact, I expected it sooner.
A Cornell expert pondered that perhaps this could be due to the economy or the cost of housing here, as apparently Florida “appears to be suffering more than other states that have lured large numbers of newcomers in recent years.”
In my experience, the answers are ‘only partially’ (economy) and ‘no’ (…

The Wabi-Sabi Way
As I read the magazine about the “way,” I asked the same question I am sure you are asking now - What the heck is The Wabi-Sabi Way?
Well, it is the “way” I plan on being and thinking from now on.
Wabi-Sabi is when you realize that you are not going to be perfect, your life is not going to be perfect, you are never going to look like Paris Hilton (that’s if you wanted to look like Paris Hilton). It’s also when you realize that your spouse is not perfect, that your kids will…

A thought-provoking piece of literature crossed my desk a few days ago: the alumni magazine from my daughter’s old school. Contained within it were a number of reunion photos from various year groups and being of that age, the class of ‘68 particularly grabbed my attention. As sixth formers then, this group of about a dozen survivors would be coming up to about age 60 now.
The picture was revelatory. Three of the women were well-dressed, impressively groomed and…

Be honest now. How many times in the last week have you justified a momentary lapse of concentration or memory loss by saying ‘ I’m having a senior moment’, or ‘It’s my age’? How often did you preface any sentence with the words, ‘At my/our time of life…’? or even worse, ‘In my day…’? How frequently did you use the killer phrase ‘I remember when…’? or justify some failing by saying ‘It was different when I was young’?
If your answer was ‘quite often’ then you’re…

As never before more women and men are interested in taking care of their skin, and ensuring that they maintain their youthful looks for as long as possible. Along with drinking plenty of water and eating a healthy diet, moisturizing and nurturing the skin with the organic skin care products is the best way to grow old gracefully.
As we mature, the elastic and collagen, which is the connective tissues that give skin its firmness and elasticity, begin to disappear. Proper skin care is essential…

We are told by those who know that with old age come illness and infirmity, poverty, loneliness and social isolation. What a bundle of treats to look forward to. No wonder old age is held in such poor regard.
But if you think about it, it shouldn’t be age per se that we should fear as the years pass, simply illness and infirmity. Without those, we ought to be as liberated as ever to pursue the type of life we would want to lead.
In an equal world we wouldn’t have to worry about poverty as with…

Adult children caring for aging parents have a tool to assess for
medication-related problems. Modern medicines can work wonders. Appropriate, safe, and effective use of medications can help you stay active, healthy, productive, and happy as you age. You can swim, sail, golf, or dance into your 80s and 90s!
But as you age, changes in the way your body reacts to medications and taking many medications can put you at risk for harmful side effects.
If you are 65 ye…
