% vs. # - is anyone else running into this?

Is it just me, or are others running into the shocking innumeracy of so many of today's new crop of marketing people?

Am I wrong to assume that possession of an MBA means you are at least marginally competent in handling the intersection of Fourth Grade arithmetic and logic?

I put it out there because I keep running into people who can't distinguish between percentages and actual numbers.

Here's a depressingly typical exchange:

Designing Well

People in our society are limited only by our failure to design. My passion became to incorporate the concept of universal design to accomodate the variations in human ability which is ordinary for all people. Design can be a powerful influence if done well to enhance the self worth and comfort of mankind.

should. Here’s what you need to know to protect your family. The rule

says when you are 40 or one of your parents are 70, it’s time to start

Rites, Lefts & Rights of Spring

My name is Eric Vengroff, and I am the Vice President and General Manager of CARP, A New Vision of Aging for Canada. CARP is like AARP in the U.S. - we're the Canadian version. In fact CARP is part of the AARP Global Network, one of the four initial countries at the founding of this organization.

I've been in the 'aging business' a long time and have learned a lot, but wouldn't consider myself an expert in any one particular discipline. Marketing, member benefits, customer…

Three Questions That Can Change Your Life!

Pat and Kate

My friend Kate and I were discussing milestones in life and, in particular, some of the questions we ask ourselves when we hit a certain age.

Many years ago, a good friend of mine – Lee Buzzard – was giving a… Continue

Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones – But Words Will Never Hurt Me!

Do you remember this little chant from our earlier days?

I can remember, so very well, a lot of the teasing that I took as a young child. I had reddish hair, a ton of freckles – I was shorter than most people, everywhere (it seemed). I can also remember how the teasing hurt. How we feel about ourselves - our self-esteem - our sense of self-worth – our self-image - this is all formed at a very young age.

Future_clouds I know, from the many workshops that I have facilitated over… Continue

Need Funding? What’s in the Dodd Bill That Could Hurt Entrepreneurs

Are you an entrepreneur looking for funding? In the new comprehensive finance reform bill that Chris Dodd is heading up, are provisions that would increase the cost, and the time to complete angel financing for new business ventures. As someone who knows first-hand how difficult (if not impossible) it is to find funding, the idea of regulating angel investors, will just make an extremely difficult situation, essentially… Continue

Caregiving And The Importance Of A Social Network

When a person takes on the responsibility of taking care of an ill family member, it is a job that can very easily consume them. The most common caregivers are ones that take care of a sick parent or spouse.

Caregiving can be stressful and may contribute to serious depression. A substantial body of research shows that family members who provide care to individuals with chronic or disabling conditions are themselves at risk. Emotional, mental, and physical health…
