Maybe there’s no “I” in team….

My daughter suggested this blog topic to me.As I pass away the hours researching for in my prime, my mind is occasionally apt to take a five minute break. During one of these breaks I designed a small poster which is now pinned on my office wall.My daughter, a doctor working in general practice, on seeing this commented that it would be ideal advice for the many archetypal women in their forties, fifties and sixties who come to see her. These overstressed and overstretched women with their…See More

Speak for yourself on YouTube

An interesting news item in this month’s Recruiter magazine. Apparently a recruitment agency which specializes in the property sector is using YouTube videos to help present job applicants to client companies. The video comprises a three minute “interview”, with the candidate answering questions in much the same way as in a live interview situation. One of the successes of the scheme was a 19 year old girl who was extremely impressive but failed to get interviews due to her age. The YouTube link…See More

Mexico opens University for the Elderly

Interesting news that Mexico, where by 2010 10% of the population will be over 60, has just opened a University for the Elderly. The move is in recognition of the fact that, according to the accompanying news release, “the elderly in Mexico remain largely marginalized”.Whilst this appears a great move and definite marker for the fact that the over 60s have the capacity and interest to learn, one hopes that the underlying tenet isn’t one of creating a playground for the old – albeit on a higher…See More

What kind of older woman?

Written by Dianne Bown-Wilson.A thought-provoking piece of literature crossed my desk a few days ago: the alumni magazine from my daughter’s old school. Contained within it were a number of reunion photos from various year groups and being of that age, the class of ‘68 particularly grabbed my attention. As sixth formers then, this group of about a dozen survivors would be coming up to about age 60 now.The picture was revelatory. Three of the women were well-dressed, impressively groomed and…See More

Don't sound old before your time

Written by Dianne Bown-Wilson.Be honest now. How many times in the last week have you justified a momentary lapse of concentration or memory loss by saying ‘ I’m having a senior moment’, or ‘It’s my age’? How often did you preface any sentence with the words, ‘At my/our time of life…’? or even worse, ‘In my day…’? How frequently did you use the killer phrase ‘I remember when…’? or justify some failing by saying ‘It was different when I was young’?If your answer was ‘quite often’ then you’re not…See More

There’s little to fear about aging

We are told by those who know that with old age come illness and infirmity, poverty, loneliness and social isolation. What a bundle of treats to look forward to. No wonder old age is held in such poor regard. But if you think about it, it shouldn’t be age per se that we should fear as the years pass, simply illness and infirmity. Without those, we ought to be as liberated as ever to pursue the type of life we would want to lead.In an equal world we wouldn’t have to worry about poverty as without…See More
