A "Type A" Boomer Goes on Vacation

I was born a “Type A,” so I’m only truly comfortable when I’m climbing Mt. Everest. As soon as I reach the summit, I feel compelled to ascend a higher peak. My legendary discipline gets me into the gym every day and allows me to waive away even the most scrumptious dessert. I’m the rare student who’s never ever pulled an all-nighter. What for? I always have plenty of time to prepare and am chomping at the bit to take the test. While many admire my drive, I believe it to be some sort of…See More

Boomers: Will You Resort to Cosmetic Procedures?

The Boomer Question: Will You Resort to Cosmetic Fixes?“To fake, or not to fake: that is the question.”  This prosaic remake of William Shakespeare’s soul-searching quote encapsulates one of the baby boomer dilemmas. Do you look in the mirror, as I do, and wonder how you can possibly look 60 when you don’t feel a day over 30? I ask myself: “Where did these ugly age spots, weird growths and sprouting hairs come from and how much longer I can stave off chicken neck?”Have you ever been tempted to…See More

Married, With Special Circumstances

Imagine you married your soulmate and raised three children together. Then your husband, at age 65, suffers a massive stroke, can no longer speak and becomes incontinent and cognitively impaired. Emotional support is a one-way street and intimacy is nonexistent. You devote all your time to meeting his needs and juggling financial worries as medical expenses exhaust the family assets. Your only outing is a monthly caregiver support meeting. The stroke has imprisoned you in the unsolicited role…See More

Surprise Foodies: Gourmet Food is Not Necessarily Healthy

My boomer and Gen Y friends are obsessed with food. They live and breathe gourmet restaurants and celebrity chefs. To them gastronomical creations are “to die for!”They avoid the drive-thru, realizing that fried food, mega does of salt, and super-sized meals do not lead to stellar yearly checkups. They also wouldn’t be caught dead in TYI Fridays or The Cheesecake Factory. Nutritionally speaking, that’s a good thing.   A whoping 96 percent of the entrees served at those eateries exceed the…See More

We Old Dogs Are Constantly Learning New Tricks

The prevalent attitude about people like me, who are over 50, is that “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Whoever came up with that ageist quip wasn’t a day over 30.  As I approach my 60th decade, I find myself making almost daily changes to accommodate my aging body. I’m way beyond sit, shake and rollover. As any boomer will tell you, the first symptom of aging is that your arms shrink. Suddenly they’re just a little too short to allow you to decipher the text on your Smartphone or read…See More

Aging Boomers: It Won't Be Long Until "Starbucks Boomer Care" Opens

As a 56 year-old boomer, I know unequivocally that my generation will not be content to retire to age segregated manicured golf courses or to live out their final years playing Bingo in assisted living. We have no intention of quietly drifting off into the sunset. Fear not; we’ll create an aging tsunami that will revolutionize the way people age forever. We boomers want things now and on our own terms. We need a new template for elder care. The current retirement communities and assisted…See More
