Doug Macallister commented on Larry Wolper's blog post What to do for incomeI have had the opportunity over the past 42 years to have been involved in several occupations and businesses. Along the way each area has had their share of mentors and instructors.
As a school teacher and coach for 6 years (on Cape Cod, Ma.)(after graduating from college at West Virginia Wesleyan College-1970), I then was employed as a bank mortgage officer and branch manager for 7 years in Naples, Fl. Next I started a small business managing a landscape contractor and maintenance service for 16 years also in Naples, Fl. My wife a long time banker, and I then sold the landscape business (after the kids graduated from high school and college) and moved to beautiful Western North Carolina. Karen continued her employment connection with the banking industry by becoming a team manager teaching bank personnel how to update onto new and more productive computerized systems while she was working "remotely" from home on her computer and phone.
I then started up another small business (decorative concrete applications-niche market) where I continued to apply traditional methods of business building on a daily basis. But, I have always been searching for something more, due to the constraints of both my time and my money in handling the businesses I have owned. If I were not overseeing the everyday process to produce results then it became difficult to duplicate the efforts that I, myself, had to put in. My time was not my own and I had to continually put in capital (ie: money!) for new and replacement equipment and major up front costs to start each project.
Even at my age (64 yrs. young!!) I have kept my options open to other possibilities or methods to better utilize both my time and money. I wanted to find something that would let me work from home and yet earn the monthly cash flow necessary to not only pay my bills but to allow more time to just enjoy life with my wife and grown family.
Travel, visiting the kids (all 5, from 30 yrs. old to 42 yrs. old!) – (I still call them “kids” even though their grown!)) and grandchildren (all 9, from 4 weeks old to 25 yrs. old!)(and now 2 great grandchildren!!) are high priorities for my wife and me. So, even though I was totally unfamiliar with using the internet, I decided to do some research online to see if there was something “out there” for me. I knew from my own life experience that I would be looking for a business that had a stable history to it, that already had stood the test of time ( I didn’t want to re-invent the wheel!), that was valuable (even if only my wife and I wanted to use it) as a stand alone opportunity and that was respected enough that I could refer the information to anyone I knew without reservation!
In addition I wanted to be able to purchase it at a realistic price for the value it could give to replace or increase my previous monthly income. I did do my research (online lingo-due diligence) and I can tell you it was easy for me to pass by the “opportunities” with all the glitz and glamour (been there, seen that, not interested). I also passed over those sites that were full of “hype”! I knew with my own experience that any business, on-line or off-line needed to provide solutions for the money and time questions we all have. I needed a business that would help solve problems (ie: money and time) and provide solutions in an understandable manner using the shortest amount of time and least amount of money necessary based on the potential income to be earned from it.
Remember, as a previous owner of several businesses I knew that it takes knowledgeable effort, productive time and allocated funds to start and build a successful income producing business. But an advantage is also to have an already successful team with mentors/instructors who have been there first and are productive income earners themselves. Well, not only did I find a problem solving business but I also connected with several other people who were already successful in the same business with a team program for duplicating their success! Plus I was able to meet and get to know the business owners personally which helped to build my trust factor in their ethical characteristics.
For me it was like a “light going off in my head”! Here was something I could do from the comfort of my home, working with already successful entrepreneurs, without excessive start up fees and an opportunity to use it’s services immediately (saving money!) and thereby also earn an income within a short period of time! That business, (you can go to my income website to find out more), gave me a solution to my money and time questions. In addition I now would be able to do all of this from the comfort of home!
