Very interesting group.  I love to connect with Baby Boomers and seniors who still have a passion for life and don't just spend their days sitting in front of the TV watching Soaps.  I'm busier now than when I worked during my career as a Probation Officer.  I retired 11 years ago and became an actress.  My upcoming book about that: Adventures with Dad: A Father and Daughter's Journey Through a Senior Acting Class, will be published May 15, 2013.

I have been working through PJ McClure's "Resolution Revolution" and as I think about my goals for the coming year, I am humbled by my 29 year-old son's comment at breakfast one morning.  In referring to his ambition to produce movies, he said, "I just want to make enough money so that I can make a difference in the world".  Sounds like a good life purpose to me.  Caution:  watch out for flying buttons!

I was struck by the idea that I was lucky enough to find my passion and my life's purpose when I was young into my calling, which is teaching. Over the last 37 years I have helped many students--both older and younger as they struggle to find meaning in what they do everyday.

I have been fortunate that over the years I have learned that the saying (paraphrased here) when you are ready a teacher will appear is true and I have been exposed to many wonderful teachers and have learned from them.

Also as a teacher, I have always learned from my students and as I continue to learn, I know that I will continue to help others as we move along our chosen paths.

I look forward to reading and joining the discussions in this forum.

Valerie, you've got that right! Pros and cons, ups and downs, but more pros and ups than their opposites... in my opinion!

Today's NO holiday for me -- yet! The plumber is here, doing more major work, I'm prepping for a webcam session with one of my students, and I have practice-related paperwork to catch up on. However, last month when I jumped ship from a hospital setting, I didn't appreciate some of the ups and downs of being a "free agent." Yes, especially in this economy, I have to be mindful of my personal and professional finances AND my schedule, but I wouldn't trade the uncertainties for the potential for growth and creativitiy. Speaking of the corporate juggernaut, I'm still getting used to the fact that my time, my schedule, my priorities are NOW MINE...I don't have to run off to some meeting, or run some errand that doesn't serve my goals. I am a grown-up now (in all senses of that word) and I don't have to answer to some "parent-figure."

Is this a great group or what? I have not seen so much talent in one place since Tom Jefferson dined alone in the White House. There are a lot of challenges out there- Environment, Health, Education, SS, Medicaire, etc but I believe the people on this forum and others like us are going to find the solutions.

I love the quote of the week in today's papers, re: the volcano and flight chaos here in Europe this week. When a passenger was told that all flights were cancelled indefinitely, she enquired.. "Does that include Business Class?" - I loved the pure optimism! Have a great weekend!
