BOOMER WORK LOSS – WHAT’S REALLY CAUSING THE PAIN?

Tom couldn’t believe his ears.  His boss had just restructured the department, and his 25 year career was over.  Being 21 years older than anyone else in the department, and his boss being only 29 years old, Tom felt unfairly judged.  He had received an excellent review 10 months earlier and was working even harder this year.  His immediate view of the cause of his pain was obvious - Age Discrimination.  However, additional reflection revealed that Tom had never held a “How can I help you achieve your goals” discussion with his boss.  He also never raised that kind of question with any of the younger associates in his department.  Over time, they had developed a team among themselves, and Tom didn’t realize that was happening.  Their team was focusing on helping their boss, but Tom only focused on performing his tasks to the best of his ability.  After his termination, instead of looking inward and thinking, “I lost touch with both the team and my boss by focusing so much on me.”, Tom chose to think others caused his pain by their “discrimination against older workers”.  The natural human response to a “perceived” attack is to emotionally defend ourselves in every way we can.  Tom was just acting normal.

It's a UBA!

After 11 years of gestation - elephants don't have anything on UBA - when you wake in the morning, the UBA website will be live at unitedboomersofamerica.com.

Part of our development will involve Radio, TV, Live Events, a BOOMER BEST WORK magazine, monthly newsletter, blog, webinars, video training, an eight book BOOMER BEST WORK Book Series, and other resources suggested by our members.  We are currently looking for Boomers - including veterans - who might have special skill and talents in the following catagories:

SEEKING MEMBER SUGGESTIONS

This Phase 1 version of the UBA website was built using the Wordpress platform.  Scheduled for release in September, Phase 2 will be easier, faster, and much more powerful.  Phase 2 is being built using an independent platform which gives us both the ability to provide added benefits to our members and the flexibility to make changes to the site based on member suggestions & needs.  Boomers have been asking for our help now, so we are delivering phase 1 giving Boomers a place where they can take advantage of our resources today.  All member suggestions and ideas are encouraged to expand member participation in the phase 2 development.  Thanks for helping make your UBA better for all the members.

FEEDBACK ON LOOK & FEEL OF UBA WEBSITE

Our goal for the UBA website is to create a feeling of friendly acceptance.  We don’t want to appear like an institution.  On the other hand, we don’t want to look like our home page was designed by the 4th grade at an elementary school with no computer classes.  We are particularly interested in any reaction to the dropdown concept.  The use of PDF downloads for large content resources gives you choices for how to manage your use of that content.  We are planning to add videos in Phase 2.  Feedback so far has been to provide the text before video.

LOOKING FOR SERVICE AND PRODUCT PROVIDERS

We are building our Directory of service and product providers that have received the free certification as “Boomer Friendly” by the Key Value Institute.  Our members will be able to use any service or product in the Directory with confidence since every provider in the Directory supports the UBA CODE OF CONDUCT.  Since the listed resources are also UBA members, UBA is promoting a member’s services and products to other UBA members.  UBA also looks to our Directory providers first when a UBA need arises.

 

The categories below need resource providers immediately.  If you know a Boomer friendly service or product provider that you would recommend to your friends, ask them to apply for free Certification (after we go live) so they can be promoted in the UBA Directory and other UBA media systems nationwide.  While you are helping someone else’s business, they are helping yours!

Oh, for anyone unfamiliar with what QR codes are, it's a code you can use for anything from a website, to a single product. They appear as a black and white 'box', and can be placed anywhere on a 'flat' surface (such as in your tv commercial or on a flyer or newspaper display ad), and when someone has installed a specific app on their smartphone, they can run the app, scan the code with their phone, and be taken directly to that web page that describes more about the product/service! They are already seeing major popularity in many 'finer' retail establishments worldwide.

To start generating your own QR codes for your web site and/or products, just Google 'qr code generator'. Most are free!

LOL All pennies appreciated William!

Actually, I'm uncertain whether an .me version WOULD work with ALL phones, as I do not work with mobile codes myself. And yes, I do believe the tablet PCs would work with the .me, but don't quote me on it!

The offer of a Social Media Advisor sounds wonderful, though I'm still in the learning process myself. Only discovered the new 'QR codes' last week, and have a QR code for my SelfHelpforSeniors.com site already! This is definitely the wave of our marketing future, BTW. If I WERE an Advisor, I would HIGHLY recommend ANYone with products or services for sale to check into them!

 

Your IT partner - are you referring to iMedia then? or another? I'd like to hear more...

Jennie- Thanks for your insight.  Would the .me version work on all phones?  Also would the .me version be needed for the tablet platforms?  UBA is looking for a Boomer to be our Social Media Adviser to work with our IT partner.  I will be happy to send you some pennies so you don't run out of your two cents :)

I totally agree with Royce. In fact, there are those of us 'younger' boomers that would even produce a .me version (for tutorial by SmartPhone).
